The Ramblings of A. Loxley

{November 28, 2011}   Thimble

She put her heart
In a thimble
He took and crushed it
Ever so nimble

She gave everything
And much more
He consumed it
And returned a bore

She gave her soul
With love and pleasure
He took from her a toll
With selfish ignorance

I’ve thought this for a while and your latest has given me an opportunity to say it. My thought has been that you’re always expressing some really good things in just a few words. And in the poem above, you said some really good things in more words. That’s the part I’m glad to see, that you’ve branched out and expanded a bit, amplified a bit. I think that since you have the good thoughts already, that you could become a pretty good poet by expanding to a line with the length and fuller thought like:

“Breathes there the man with soul so dead
Who never to himself hath said,” (Sir Walter Scott).

It just takes some practice, getting the rhythm exactly right, learning to take the first thought that pops into one’s head and saying it poetically to get the both the rhythm and rhyme. I wrote an article about “Reading Poetry to Write Poetry” on my blog, in the category “About Poetry”. Basically, it had the thought that if you and I are to get better at writing poetry, we must continue to read poetry that is the standard we wish to attain. Keep writing! And keep reading! 🙂

Again, I enjoyed reading this one & others that you’ve written.

Thank you. It’s been a while, but I’m back.
